Dolpa

A Breath taking spectacle of scenic beauties, the time unfed rich tapestry of monastic life, preserved primitive life styles not worn out against the sands of time, unruffled by modernization and all that speak volumes of this exotic land. Bound for Dolpa, stretched before you stand towering massifs, Kanjiroba, Dhaulagiri. Dolpa lies in their lap. Shey Phoksundo Lake in turquoise blue shimmering amidst rock faces, at an elevation of 3600meters from the sea level. It is abounds a fabulous surround. The 167 meters high Sulgad Fall is yet another addition to the bounties of this district that pours from a lake. Here, the majority are Buddhists or Bon –Po, a religious cult which is not circumscribed within Buddhism but mirrors Buddhist faiths considerably with a profusion of local fervors. Bordering with Tibet, Tibetan culture has made ingresses into Dolpa at different phases in history. Regional essences blended with imported elements through a process of acculturation and assimilation deepening its religiosity is what embodies Bon –Po faiths in spirit. People who crave for exclusive change to slough off the world of usualness and humdrum existence and seek for an otherworldly milieu, soaking with Bon –Po in a stream of their fabulous culture for a moment will transport them into a world of their dreams.

Monasteries come first and foremost. Monastic rules betoken all that Dolpa live by culturally and religiously and cast impacts on all their day to day affairs and more. The Shey Phoksundo Lake or the Shey Phoksundo national park have derived their names after the 12th century Shey Monastery.  Monastic cultures are embedded in the core of their hearts and are the life bloods that run through their veins. All their daily chores, cultural activities, festivities reverberate something of monasticism.  Edifices worthy of mentioning and Dolpa glory in are: Hurikot Monastery, Rigmo Monastery. They survive enduring ravages of time. These monumental works of art Dolpa treasures are the sum and substance of its rich heritage. The Lamas of monasteries unroll Thankas, the traditional Tibetan painting works that gripe, mystify and immerse you in a world transcending spatiotemporal order. History unfolds episodes wherein pilgrims at times forgot to return once they set foot in here, for the majesty of monastery and the mystery of monastic cultures transmuted them. They went transfixed, amuck in a state of otherworldliness.
